Holidays are upon us, and thoughts turn toward tart fruits like cranberry, pomegranate, and plum. We have been incorporating these tart flavors into new fruit concentrate blend and then adding them to our brewed beer. In this process of brewing we have come up with an abundance of spent grains left over from the brewing process.  We decided to utilize these spent grains into a spent grain granola sweetened with natural sugars and one of our developed fruit juice blends.

Spent grains that normally go for livestock feed is now being incorporated into healthy breakfast items, dessert and snack options.   Not only does this help brewers use this by product of the beer making, it makes good environment sense and gives companies another revenue stream. These grains are rich in fiber and can provide products a nutty flavor with the allergen concern. Along with the health benefits of the spent grains, cranberries help lower the risk of cancer. Pomegranates, help reduce free radicals and are high in antioxidants.  Plums help to lower cholesterol, boosts immune system and helps to control diabetes.

Here at Northwest Naturals, we would love to help you formulate for your healthy snack applications. We developed this tasty Spent Grain Pomegranate Ginger Granola for you to try, or explore our applications section to find more creative formulations.
