Sangria is named after the Spanish word for "bleeding" because of the typical dark-red color. Sangria originated in Spain and Portugal and is a beverage containing Red Wine, Brandy, Fresh Fruits and Sweeteners. Typical fruits used are apples, berries, grapes, melons and citrus juices. Sweeteners for this beverage have ranged from sugar to honey, agave or even orange and other citrus juices.
Sangria can take many forms and most establishments will customize their drinks to make them unique. In my great exploration of this beverage, I have seen the brandy removed and sometimes replaced with another spirit or nothing at all. My favorite sangria's tend to have some bubbles added which compliments the flavors nicely. The best part about Sangria's is as long as you stick to the idea of fruit and wine you really can go anyway with your flavor profile.
The most memorable Sangria's for me are those that combine fruits, which I would not have expected to see in a typical sangria but they worked and tasted amazing. Once in Tucson, Arizona, I enjoyed a pomegranate orange sangria, and at one of my favorite restaurants in Portland, Oregon, they serve an amazing Passion Fruit Tropical Sangria.
